Style & Composition

Providing a refreshing and contemporary approach…

I like to describe my style of photography as natural, real and classic. No embarrassing poses or clichéd moments and no post digital effects creating what many believe to be the latest fashion in wedding photography.

My images are true to the occasion they are documenting. They are images that will last a lifetime – you’ll fall in love with them again and again!

Preference for natural lighting is a key element distinguishing me from many other wedding photographers. Allowing areas to stay in shadow or darkness and exposing for the highlight allows for a deeper mood to be created within the photograph.

Allowing the images to appear as they are creates a sense of realness and reliving the moment when the images are reviewed - as opposed to being somewhat removed from the situation if the images are artificially lit.

Mood sample

In this photograph I have left the foreground dark in order to emphasise the mood of this moment whilst documenting the wedding day formalities and following procession. Had I used a flash in this situation the photograph would have portrayed a different mood, a loss of grain structure and subsequently the romanticism of the aged appearance.

Location choice is particularly important to the style of the photographs and the mood they create. I am always endeavouring to find ways to make the photographs unique from each other and finding interesting elements within the landscape can help to create that special image.

Making most of the surrounding landscape works to create art pieces which capture more emotion than just a simple record of events.

Styling for success

There are many techniques used to capture a flattering and pleasing image of the happy couple and their guests, however none of which will be successful if the couple or guests are not involved in the process.

Many wedding photographers use the word “candid” to describe their photographic style..almost signifying that their images are captured by accident or from spontaneous one-off moments that can never be repeated.

This photograph would not have nearly been as effective if the couple were not enjoying themselves and not directed in some way.
